Feeder Canal Residency

Feeder Canal Residency, 2023
Silverthorne Lane, Bristol
Gingko Projects

The Feeder Canal Residency was a research project at Bristol’s Silverthorne Lane. It consisted of a range of activities that investigated the wildlife, ecology, and history of Bristol’s Feeder Canal. The residency was created to influence the designs for a permanent artwork in a public urban nature reserve as part of Silverthorne Lane’s redevelopment. The artwork is scheduled for installation in Summer 2026.

Artists Rachael Champion and Jonathan Trayte worked with Gingko Projects and a series of Bristol-based (and beyond) collaborators to realise this residency throughout the Summer and Autumn of 2023. There were opportunities for the public to get involved and learn about Bristol’s Feeder Canal throughout the residency. The residency consisted of several ecological surveys of the area including a mini Bio-Blitz, a bat walk and a freshwater survey. A series of temporary sculptural wildlife habitats were created as well as a commissioned sound artwork in response to the Feeder Canal. Lastly a public event and exhibition took place to showcase and further our research into the history and ecology of Silverthorne Lane and the Feeder Canal.

More information coming soon.
